Revision to Sigma Kappa Delta Charter for UWC English Department
From John Pruitt:
I recently spoke with Sheila Byrd, my contact with Sigma Kappa Delta (English honor society for two-year colleges). She told me that the SKD board of directors has decided that each campus should charter its own chapter because we're so spread out and cover a lot of ground. The cost to charter a chapter is $50, so she suggested that new advisors should recruit first, then collect student dues, and finally submit the petition to charter, which you can find at http://www.english2.org.
The cost per student is $30 to Sigma Kappa Delta. In order to cover the $50 chartering fee, it's recommended that you charge each student $50. If you have enough members, with the excess $20 per student you'll cover the chartering fee and have some money left over for a local budget as well.
For the sake of paperwork necessary for the petition, I have the original letter that Margaret Cleek wrote, so I can send you a copy of that if you choose to charter. Because Rock County has 185 potential new members, I'm going to contact them all by snail mail rather than e-mail. I can send you a copy of that letter as well if you want to use it as a template.
Sheila's been very accommodating. Give it a go and see what happens.
If you need the Constitution to establish a group on your campus, SKD has it online, as well as a chapter handbook. Here are the membership requirements:
Be enrolled in a two-year college with a Sigma Kappa Delta Chapter
Have completed a minimum of one college course (excluding developmental courses) in English language or literature
Have no grade lower than a B in English
Have a minimum grade point average of 3.3 (on a 4.0 scale) in general scholarship
Have completed at least one semester or two quarters of college course work for a cumulative total of twelve semester hours
Students are not required to be English majors
