Proficiencies Established by the English Department for English 102

These proficiencies will be the basis for grading your papers and journals,  and students successfully completing English 102, a core course for both transfer and receiving the AA Degree.

Textbook Information

·        Convergences: Method, Message, Medium by Robert Atwan.  Bedford/St. Martin’s 2002.

·        Easy Writer by Andrea A. Lunsford. Bedford/St. Martin’s Second Edition 2002.

Students must bring both textbooks to class each day.  Assignments must be critically read prior to coming to class.  Written assignments will be based on the reading assignments and class discussion.  Selections from Easy Writer will be assigned throughout the semester: “Writing” 1, 2 and 3; “Language” 16, 17, 18 and 19; “Research” 34, 35, 36 and 37; and “Documentation” 38, 39, 40 and 41. Each student should use the sections on “Sentence Grammar,” “Sentence Style,” “Multilingual Writers,” “Punctuation/Mechanics,” and pages 273-298 based on needs and comments on journals and papers.

Writing Requirements

1.       Each student must turn in 3 papers. Due dates are listed on the syllabus. Each paper will require research and documentation (MLA, APA, CBE or Chicago Style), must be 5-7 pages typed and double-spaced with appropriate format, and submitted on the due date.  The papers will count for 60% of the final grade.

2.     Each student must turn in 4 of 6 journal assignments based on material from Convergences.  If the student elects to turn in 6, the best 4 grades will count toward the final journal grade that will be worth 20% of the final grade in the class.

3.     Each student is expected to participate in discussion and be involved in collaborative projects.  Quality participation will be worth 20% of the final grade.  You will not be able to demonstrate critical reading and thinking if you have not read the assignments before class.  The reading assignments have been kept reasonably short (approximately 15-25 pages a week) in order for you to read, absorb, and intellectual consider the message, method and medium of each selection.
