Criteria for Instructional Academic Staff Appointments

 

      These criteria, in accordance with UW Colleges Senate Policies IP#320, IP#322, &  IP#323 apply to all       Mathematics Department Instructional Academic Staff.

 

 

A.         General Criteria and Policies

 

Initial appointments of instructional academic staff and course assignments shall be based on the minimum requirements for appointment as stated below.  Evidence of superior teaching ability shall be the major factor in making appointments in accordance with the Department's mission of providing quality mathematics instruction in both the developmental and degree-credit programs.

 

Reappointment of instructional academic staff shall be based on previous teaching  performance as measured by such means as student evaluations and classroom  visitation reports.

 

The department chair shall specify the initially approved courses for each new academic staff member.  The initial range of approved course assignments may be increased to include more courses depending upon a record of successful teaching.

 

 

B.         Specific Criteria

 

1.   Degree-Credit Course Appointments: The minimum mathematics requirement to teach degree-credit mathematics courses is a Masters Degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or comparable background in mathematics.  In exceptional cases this requirement may be temporarily waived for persons appointed to teach MAT 105 or MAT 110.

 

2.   Developmental Course Appointments: The minimum mathematics requirement to teach developmental mathematics courses in the UW Colleges is an undergraduate major in mathematics.  In exceptional cases this requirement may be temporarily waived.  Each applicant for such teaching will be evaluated by the chair of the Department of Mathematics.

 

3.   After retirement, tenured members of the department may be appointed at the rank of Senior Lecturer.
