Tenured
Faculty Review and Development
The Department of Mathematics shall conduct a program for
tenured faculty review and development that is in compliance with the UW
Colleges' tenured faculty review and development policies. (Senate #35)
The department interprets the intent of this policy as a program which
will emphasize assisting tenured faculty in planning instructional and
professional development activities as well as exploring ways to implement
these plans. The approach of the
department will be that the review and development conferences should be a
positive, gainful experience for everyone involved in the process.
A. Departmental guidelines
for scheduling review and development conferences.
1. The Executive
Committee will prepare a five-year schedule for review and development
conferences for all tenured faculty. Each tenured faculty member's name will be
listed in one of the five yearly schedules.
Each yearly schedule will contain approximately one-fifth of the tenured
members of the department, that is, normally between 18% and 22% of the tenured
faculty. The conference schedule will be
updated annually by April 15.
2. Those faculty
members for whom the period of time since their last review (i.e.
tenure/promotion) is longest shall be given priority consideration for earlier
review.
3. Each year, the
Executive Committee will make any necessary adjustment in the schedule of conferences
to insure that each tenured faculty member will be reviewed once in each
five-year period following the initiation of the first conferences.
B. The department
chair's responsibilities.
1. By May 1, the
department chair will notify those tenured faculty members who will be
scheduled for review the subsequent year.
The annual current schedule of conferences will be distributed to
affected department each year by the chair.
2. The department
chair will schedule the face-to-face conferences which will involve the faculty
member, the department chair (except in cases when the department chair is the
tenured faculty member being reviewed) and the campus dean.
3. The department
chair has responsibility for promoting the linkage between faculty development
and faculty review.
C. Review of the
department chair.
When the review conference of the department chair occurs,
the Executive Committee will appoint one of its members to attend the
face-to-face conference and write the report.
D. Five-year files.
1. Each tenured
department faculty member is responsible for maintaining a file that reflects
the most recent five years of faculty development activities. These should primarily include faculty
activity reports and merit review letters.
The five-year files may include other materials that are reflective of
the faculty member's development activities.
2. Faculty members
are encouraged to include plans and goals for future development activities in
their five-year files.
