UWC-DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES BULLETIN
Number 3, Spring 1995
This bulletin, rather irregularly published by the department's Professional
Activities Committee, seeks to inform members of the department about upcoming
events as well as about past accomplishments and activities of departmental
colleagues. Material to be included in subsequent bulletins and suggestions
for activities of the committee should be sent to any of the members. For
1994 - 95 the members are Gary Britton (chair), Ghulam Shah, Bhagat Singh.
WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS
Cooperative learning has been gaining much support among mathematics faculty.
The MAA has moved beyond trying to explain it, or convince faculty that it is
a useful approach to learning mathematics, and is offering workshops for
faculty to study ways of making use of cooperative learning. If you have not
already read the MAA letter about this, ask your campus associate chair for a
copy or send an email message to loro@math.purdue.edu. The application
deadline for the July 10-21, 1995 workshop at Purdue is March 10.

Several UW Colleges mathematics faculty have
attended Ricks College summer workshops in past years and the reports have
been uniformly positive.
UW Colleges Mathematics Department: The department will again conduct its own
summer workshop. This will be a two day event focused on the pedagogical
issues of teaching precalculus courses. Tom Peneski will serve as workshop
coordinator. Partial funding through two grants for this workshop has
recently been announced. Additional details of the workshop will be available
soon. Members of the department who have projects or issues which they would
like included are invited to submit proposals for presentations.
Purdue University: Two workshops on Constructivits Methods in Undergraduate
Mathematics Teaching.

AWARDS
Some of the professional activity awards for UWC faculty who teach mathematics
include the following.
- Karl Kosler: While at UWM during his fall 1993 sabbatical to do
research there, Karl was awarded the position of Honary
Fellow in the UWM Mathematics Department.
- Jerry Keepers: Received an NSF grant to attend the NSF Calculus
Institute using CAS in Kentucky during summers of 1993
and 1994.
- Paul Sundheim: Had a summer 1994 UWC Summer Research Grant to continue
research in Knot Theory.
- Hal Schlais: Received the Underkofler Excellence in Teaching Award
from UW System in 1994.
- J. Sris: Received NSF grants to attend the NSF workshops "New
Start for College Mathematics", Math 101-102 at U.S.
Military Academy, and "Calculus in Context", Aquinas
College, Grand Rapids, MI. Both in summer 1994.
- M. Maheswaran: Has a spring 1995 sabbatical for continued research on
"Mathematical Models for Large-Scale Circulations in
Massive Stars with Winds".
- R. Christensen: Received, for the department, a UTIC grant for a 1995
summer workshop, and a UWC Supplemental Professional
Development Grant for a 1995 summer workshop.
- Bhagat Singh: A paper, "On the Oscillation of a Volterra Integral
Equation", has been accepted for publication in the
Czechoslovak Mathematics Journal.
- Connie Hemr: Elected as the first president of WISMATYC.PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT FUND
The Department of Mathematics' Professional Development Fund currently has a
balance of about $5600. Interest is being earned at approximately 7% per year
and no money has yet been expended. But now that the fund has grown, through
additional contributions and retained earnings, some of the earnings will be
used to help support professional development activities for the department.
A portion of the expenses for the summer workshop will be supported by an
allocation from the fund.
A copy of the general guidelines and procedures for allocations from the
Professional Development Fund are included at the end of this article. Some
changes have been made since a draft version of this was distributed last
year. If you have addition modifications to suggest please send them to Gary
Britton.
In order to increase this fund to the point where more extensive
activites can be supported it would be most helpful for department members to
try to seek additional contributions for the fund. Individual faculty, alumni
in science and mathematics, and friends of the university, are all potential
contributors. Checks should be made out to the Washington County Campus
Foundation and designated as being for the Mathematics Professional
Development Fund. Contributions should be sent to either Cathi Dzeidzic,
Business Manager, or Gary Britton, Professor of Mathematics, UWC-Washington
County, 400 University Drive, West Bend, WI.

Additional funding from the institution, from campuses, from UWS,
or from external sources is to be sought for each project.
- 2.1.2 Attendance of individual faculty members at conferences,
meetings, and other professional activities taking place away from the
individual's home campus.
- 2.1.2.1 Funding for such activities would normally be used in cases where
campus funding would not be available but the Department Chair or
Executive Committee deemed the activity of sufficient value to
warrant support. (For example, this would enable the Chairman to
suggest funding for support of professional activities required for
an individual as a result of post-tenure review.)
- 2.1.3 Conferences and meetings hosted by a UWC campus for mathematics
faculty from other institutions.
- 3.1 Modifications in these guidelines must be consistent with UW System
