James Aagaard has been music director at the UW-Richland campus since 1976. He holds an Associate degree from Waldorf College in forest City, Iowa, a Bachelors of Music from St. Olaf College and a masters degree from the University of Northern Iowa. From 1970-1974 he was music director at East Chain Public High School in Fairmont, Minnesota and in 1975 he was a sabbatical replacement at Waldorf College where he conducted the Waldorf Concert Band and toured with the New World Singers. Aagaard's particular interest is as a musical theater enthusiast. He has performed leading roles with numerous semi-professional theater companies in Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin and has also directed musicals for theater companies throughout the upper Midwest. An active member of the Sonneck Society for American Music he has had a number of book and record reviews published in that group's newsletter. His "speciality" is the music of George Gershwin. At the UW-Richland campus Aagaard conducts the Campus Band and Choir and is the director/accompanist of the Lost Chords Quartet. As a community musician he is a member of the Brass-R-Us brass quintet and is the director of the Richland Community Band the Ocooch Chorale Chamber Singers. He is also the founder and director for the Coppertop Summer Theater. |

Daniel Ackley, Senior Lecturer, UW-Washington County, BFA in Music Theory and Composition, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, MM in Music Theory and Composition, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, DMA in Composition and Conducting, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Ackley has conducted the University's Moraine Symphonic Band since September, 1994. In addition, he has taught World Music, Fundamentals of Music, Music Appreciation, Music History, Jazz History and Appreciation, and conducting and saxophone lessons. Dr. Ackley is also the conductor and director of the Washington County Youth Orchestra, the River City Irregulars Community Band of West Bend, the director of the Still Waters' United Methodist Church choir choir. He has also guest conducted the University of Wisconsin-Madison Wind Ensemble, the Flyway Conference Honors Band, the Lakeshore Symphonic Band, and the Slinger High School Band. He has also served as adjudicator for the Wisconsin School Music Association. As a composer and arranger, Dr. Ackley's music has been played in southeast Wisconsin. |

Michael J. Arendt, Professor of Music, UW-Manitowoc, BM, St. Norbert College, MM, Wichita State University. Professor Arendt teaches music theory, Literature, UW-Manitowoc Lakeshore Wind Ensemble, UW-Manitowoc Lakeshore Big Band. MUS 180, and conducting at the UW Manitowoc campus and is the founder and conductor of the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble and Big Band. He is also the music director of the Lakeshore Collegiate Chorale. Arendt has served as Chair of the Department of Music of the University of Wisconsin Colleges. He also serves as the conductor and music director of the Heritage Wind Symphony of Green Bay. In addition he has served as the Principal French Horn and assistant conductor of the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra and is currently Principal Horn with the St. Norbert College Community Band. Professor Arendt holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from St. Norbert college and a Master of Music Degree in conducting, performance and music theory from Wichita (Kansas) State University. He is also a frequent guest conductor/clinician and music festival/contest adjudicator. In addition, Professor Arendt received a Citation of Excellence in recognition of outstanding performance from the Wisconsin Chapter of the Nation Band Association. He has participated in Conductors' Symposia sponsored by the International Music Festival. Arendt has also served as an adjudicator for the Wisconsin National Band Association State Band Competitions. Professor Arendt was honored by the Wisconsin Music Educator's Association for twenty-five years of dedicated service to music education in Wisconsin. He is a member of the National Band Association, the College Band Directors National Association, the Music Educators National Conference and the Wisconsin Music Educators Conference. Claude
Cailliet,
originally from Kenosha, WI, spent thirteen years in Los Angeles before moving
to Madison in 1990. While in Los Angeles, he performed and recorded with a
wide variety of internationally known artists, most notably; Neil Young, U2,
Crosby, Stills and Nash, Joe Jackson, Joe Walsh, Davie Lee Roth, The
Temptations, and The Four Tops. Cailliet also performed with Tito Puente,
Poncho Sanchez, Ruben Blades, Luis Enrique, and many other internationally
known Latin music artists. Cailliet also recorded several movies and
television /radio commercials, as well as television appearances including the
Arsenio Hall Show. |

Dr. David De Lyser is an Assistant Professor of Music at UW-Marshfield/Wood County, where he teaches Music Theory, Aural Skills, Fundamentals, Music Appreciation, and History of Rock and Roll, and conducts the University/Community Symphonic Band and Concert Choir. He has also taught Jazz History and directed the Jazz Ensemble. He directs the summer high school choir camp at the university, and is a clinician and adjudicator for local school ensembles and both local and state solo and ensemble contests. He earned a D.A. degree from the University of Northern Colorado with a primary emphasis in Music Theory and Composition and a secondary emphasis in Conducting. In addition to the UW Marshfield/Wood County performing ensembles, his conducting experience includes the 2006 Marawood Conference Honors Choir in Wisconsin, and various band, orchestra, and choral ensembles in Northern Colorado and in the Portland area, including the University of Portland Orchestra and the Rocky Mountain Chorale. He has previously taught at the University of Northern Colorado, Portland Community College, and the University of Portland, where he received a M.A. degree in Composition. Dr. De Lyser’s string orchestra composition, Memoria, was the winner of the 2005 Mercury Ensemble Composition Award. His song cycle, A Soldier’s Passage, was performed at the 2005 College Music Society Regional Conference in Denver. In addition, he has had compositions performed or premiered by the University of Portland Orchestra, the Fort Hays State University Concert Choir, the Fort Collins High School Orchestra, and the Rocky Mountain Chorale. His compositions are published by Really Good Music, LLC in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. |

Jeff Erickson is a professional saxophonist and educator who performs throughout the Midwest in jazz, latin and world music idioms. He holds a Master of Music degree from DePaul University. His performing experience includes appearances with such artists as Clark Terry, Bob Mintzer, Kevin Mahogany, Kurt Elling, Wayne Newton, The Temptations, Rita Moreno, Frankie Valli, Bernadette Peters, Sugar Blue, Bobby Shew and the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. He has also performed with symphony orchestras in Florida, Chicago, and Wisconsin and played in numerous pit orchestras as a woodwind specialist. While living in Chicago he led his own jazz quartet and performed in numerous big bands, including the Big Band of Chicago, Barrett Deems’ big band and the 911 Mambo Orchestra. He has also played with many salsa and merengue bands and served as the musical director for Martin Vicente’s nine-piece afro-salsa group Energia! His solo work is featured on recordings by the Great River Big Band, Brian O’Hern’s Model Citizen’s Big Band, the Common Faces and Clark Terry with the DePaul University Jazz Ensemble. Currently, Erickson leads his own jazz quartet that performs throughout state. He is also the co-founder and leader of the Wisconsin Jazz Orchestra, a 17-piece big band created to perform, educate young musicians, and promote jazz and big band music in the State of Wisconsin. As an educator, Erickson has taught saxophone and jazz studies courses at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago and is presently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County where he directs the jazz ensemble and coordinates the instrumental music program. In addition, he teaches courses at the University of Wisconsin-Marshfield/Wood County. He is busy as a guest artist and clinician throughout Wisconsin at jazz festivals and in schools and maintains active teaching studios in both Stevens Point and Wausau. |

Professor of music at the UW Colleges' Sheboygan campus, he teaches music classes and directs the instrumental music programs. He has taught at UW Sheboygan since 1969. A native of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Gates played trumpet in high school band, jazz ensemble and the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra. He performed in the University of Wisconsin Madison Bands and Symphony Orchestra as a brass major on trumpet, French horn, euphonium and bass trombone. Gates received his Bachelor of Music in 1959 and a Masters Degree in arranging and conducting from UW Madison in 1961 in addition to pursuing extensive post-graduate work at the Madison campus. Gates conducted bands, orchestra and jazz ensemble at Dominican High School in Whitefish Bay for one year and Beloit High School for five years. In 1966 he accepted the position of assistant director of bands at the UW Madison campus and in 1968 became the director of the famous University of Wisconsin Marching Band. In addition to conducting, Gates taught arranging, orchestration and advised graduate composition majors. Gates also serves as a technology consultant and clinician in middle schools, high schools and colleges. He has given MIDI-based curriculum seminars, served as a clinician and conducted honors bands throughout the state and the Tucson, Arizona magnet schools. Gates is a member of Phi Mu Alpha and is a past recipient of the Kaplan Excellence in Teaching award. |

Peter W. Gibeau is an Associate Professor of Music at the Washington County campus of the UW Colleges. He earned his Ph.D. in Music Theory from UW-Madison, M.M. in Early Music Performance Practice from the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville, and a B.M. in Piano Performance from Oberlin. He also studied choral conducting with Robert Fountain while at Madison. Professor Gibeau teaches Freshman Theory at his campus and Sophomore Theory over AudioGraphics, a distance-education format. He also teaches the survey and history courses on his campus and directs the Moraine Chorus, a 55-member student/community choir. In his spare time, Gibeau hikes, reads, and makes toys and gadgets in his shop. |

David Giebler has served the UW Marinette campus in music since 1981. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Fort Hays State University in 1979 and a Master of Music degree from UW Madison in 1981. His teaching at UW Marinette includes courses in theory, music fundamentals, music literature and appreciation, history of Jazz, American Popular and Rock music, director of the choral studies program and college level piano. As a pianist he has soloed with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, played in live radio broadcasts over Wisconsin Public Radio and concertized at universities and soloist or accompanist throughout the U.S and in the Czech Republic. |

Department Chair Beginning in 2005, Craig Hurst (Right) has been the chair of the University of Wisconsin Music Department. Since January of 1993, Dr. Hurst has been the director of bands at UW Waukesha. Dr. Hurst holds degrees from Boise State University, North Texas State University and the University of North Texas. At North Texas, he was a conducting student of Dr. Robert Winslow and studied trumpet with John J. Haynie and Dr. Leonard A Candelaria. In addition to his experience and expertise as a music educator, adjudicator and clinician, Dr. Hurst has distinguished himself as a performer on trumpet. In the greater Milwaukee area he has performed as principal trumpet or trumpet soloist with the Waukesha Area Symphonic Band, the Waukesha Park and Recreation Band, the Concord Chamber Orchestra, the Milwaukee Stadpfeifer, The Jazz Express Big Band, the Wisconsin Wind Orchestra and the Milwaukee Police Band. Hurst also has performed in the Festival of Trumpets at the 1993-4-5-6 International Trumpet Guild Conferences and in June of 1995 performed as soloist with the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble (Manitowoc, WI) in a cultural exchange tour of Japan. In 1998 Dr. Hurst will perform with the Marshfield/Wood County (WI) Symphony Orchestra as a soloist on Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concerto #2 in F Major. Hurst's interest in the local arts community is evident in his service on the boards of directors for the Waukesha Area Symphonic Band, Waukesha Area Arts Alliance and the Concord Chamber Orchestra. In addition to performing and conducting, Hurst's scholarship is represented in published articles in the Southeastern Journal of Music Education and the Journal of the International Trumpet Guild. He also writes reviews for concert by the Waukesha Symphony Orchestra published in the Waukesha County Freeman. |

Jim Langkamp has been a choir director and vocal music instructor for over twenty years. He presently teaches at Madison Area Technical College and the University of Wisconsin - Rock County college campus in Janesville. Previous to this Jim held similar positions at both Lake Geneva Badger and Janesville Parker high schools. A gifted pianist and vocalist, Jim is always in demand as a guest clinician, adjudicator and conductor. Jim holds both Bachelors and Masters degrees in music education. |

Prior to joining the UW-Fond du Lac faculty in the Fall of 2008, Dan Rager taught ten years at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, Ohio. He is recognized internationally as a composer and conductor of symphonic music and is in demand as a composer and conductor throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Russia. In addition, he has over 100 compositions and arrangements published by major publishing companies. His music enjoys international performances and recordings by The Cleveland Chamber Symphony, The United States Navy Band, The Cleveland Orchestra, The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Frederick Fennell Symphonic Winds, The Washington Winds, The Apollo String Quartet, The Saratov Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia, The State Radio & Television Orchestra of Moscow, The Amsterdam Windorchestra, The South Korean Philharmonic and countless orchestras and windorchestras throughout Australia, Canada, Europe, Japan and Russia. |

Thomas L. Patterson, MM is Associate Lecturer of Music on the Fox Valley and Waukesha Campuses of the University of Wisconsin-Colleges. He is active as a trombonist and clinician with the Madison Brass. A native of Aurora, IL, Patterson earned his Associate in Arts Degree from Waubonsee Community College, Sugar Grove, IL, Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music from the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater, Master of Music Degree in Brass Performance from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He has held teaching positions at the University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac Campus, Marian College, The Wayland Academy, and earned the distinction of Master Craftsman Brass Instrument Maker with Getzen Musical Instruments of Elkhorn, WI. Patterson has performed with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, the Madison Early Music Festival, the Southern Lakes Masterpiece Chorale, the Holton-Elkhorn Band, the Beaver Dam Area Orchestra, Bobby Lewis and the Miss America Show, and Las Vegas Bandleader Tony Scodwell.. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Beaver Dam Area Orchestra, the Beaver Dam Community Band, and currently serves on the board of the Beaver Dam Area Community Theater. Currently serving as Director of Music Ministries at Trinity Church UMC, Tom resides in Beaver Dam with his wife Denise. |

Marc Sackman, D.M.A., has served as Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands at UW- Fox Valley since 2004, where he conducts the Fox Valley Concert Band, UW-Fox Jazz Ensemble, and teaches a number of other music courses. As a flutist and conductor, Dr. Sackman has performed in a wide range of musical ensembles and settings, from the Opera at Rutgers and Rutgers Summerfest Orchestras to chamber music to jazz and Irish folk music. In addition to his degrees in music, he holds a B.A. in History. Upon completing his Bachelor of Music studies at the University of Illinois, he studied in Paris with members of the Orchestre de Paris, and later in Munich with Hermann Klemeyer, Solo Flutist of the Bavarian State Opera. During this time he pursued a successful career freelancing. He returned to the U.S. to further his studies, and earned his Masters of Music and Doctorate at The Mason Gross School of the Arts in Flute Performance, where he studied flute with Robert Dick and Dr. James C. Scott. He was conductor of the Rutgers Alumni Wind Symphony and held faculty positions as Director of Bands at Alfred University in Alfred, NY, and at Central Oregon Community College in Bend, Oregon. His conducting teachers include Dr. Harry Begian, Allan McMurray, H. Robert Reynolds, and Dr. Scott Whitener. He has also studied flute with Robert Dick and played in master classes of Bernard Goldberg and Keirth Underwood, among others. He maintains membership in the College Band Directors National Association, National Flute Association, International Association of Jazz Educators, and Music Educators National Conference. He performs on baritone saxophone with the Big Band Reunion in Appleton. |

Hailed as “very talented for his young years,” Benjamin S. Schoening is one of the up and coming conductors of his generation. Benjamin has held conducting positions with the Northland Master Chorale and White Mountain Symphony Orchestra. He has had guest conducting appearances with the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra, University of Illinois Chamber Orchestra, University of Illinois Opera, Washington Park Concert Choir, and Student Orchestra of Provence in Aubagne, France. Benjamin has also been a guest clinician for many events in the South West United States. In addition to performing, Benjamin is an avid teacher. He is formerly the director of musical activities and professor of music at Northland Pioneer College. Benjamin is currently the Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin – Barron County, where he is Director of Campus Musical Activities, Director of the Holiday Festival, and Conductor of the Red Cedar Choir. |

Russell Thorngate conducts the University of Wisconsin, Marathon County Concert Choir and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, as well as teaching Vocal Techniques, voice lessons, and Music Literature and Appreciation. He is a veteran choir director and music educator, having taught public school music in Wisconsin for many years. He has directed community choirs, junior high, high school, and college choirs, high school and college vocal jazz ensembles, and church choirs. In addition, he has directed seventeen musical theatre productions for both schools and community theatre groups. For two years prior to coming to UWMC, he was director of the Ball State University Choral Union in Muncie, Indiana. Mr. Thorngate just finished his doctoral coursework and exams at Ball State University, and is currently writing his dissertation. While at Ball State, he studied conducting with Jeffrey Pappas, Richard Mathey, and Robert Nance, and studied voice with Craig Priebe. In 2006, he received his Master's degree in Choral Conducting from Butler University, where he studied choral conducting with Eric Stark and Henry Leck, and orchestral conducting with Richard Auldon Clark. In addition he directed the Butler University Women’s Glee Club, he was the Assistant Director of the vocal jazz ensemble Jordan Jazz. He is a cum laude graduate of San Jose State University, where he studied conducting with Charlene Archibeque. He has also performed professionally as a singer and instrumentalist. Mr. Thorngate is a member of American Choral Directors’ Association, Music Educators' National Conference, International Association of Jazz Educators, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. |

Lynda Zimmerman holds a Bachelor of Music Education from UW-Eau Claire and a Master of Music in piano performance from East Texas State University. Lynda has been an accompanist for local performing groups and has performed in a number of musicals. She is an Assistant Professor of music at UW-Fox Valley where she teaches piano and Fundamentals of Music. One of Lynda's primary interests is providing leadership in the investigation of the effects of various musical activities with infants. She cooperates and provides musical activities for the kinder care program on the UW-Fox campus. |
