Course Description: WOM 101: An introduction to the major problems addressed by women’s studies with an emphasis on the theoretical and methodological issues involved in gaining accurate knowledge about women. Literary, philosophical, historical and social science perspectives are used to understand the experience of women and the cultural construction of gender. SS/IS
Course Proficiencies (as determined by the Women’s Studies Department of the UW Colleges): Analyze, synthesize, evaluate and interpret information and ideas;
Construct and support hypotheses and arguments;
Integrate knowledge and experience to arrive at creative solutions;
Read and listen with comprehension and critical perception;
Respond to the media actively and analytically;
Write clearly, precisely, and in a well-organized manner;
Gather information from printed sources, electronic sources, and observation.
Course Procedures: Typically, each class will begin with a brief lecture to provide the context for our discussions. Then, you may be asked either to work together in small groups or to give brief reports to the class on various weekly assignments. There will be a lot of reading in the class, both from the texts and from other materials I will make available to you, so you will need to allow adequate time to prepare for each class. (A time-honored guide for preparation for college classes is to plan to spend two hours outside of class for each hour in class.)
Course Policies: You are expected to attend all class sessions unless illness or emergency prohibits your attendance. If you must miss class, you should check with a classmate to determine what you missed and to secure any handouts that might have been distributed. Points will be deducted for assignments submitted past the due date, and I reserve the right to refuse to accept work submitted more than one week late without documentation of serious illness or emergency. You are also expected to read carefully the policies contained in the University of Wisconsin Colleges catalog and the UW-Marinette Student Handbook and Calendar. (Copies of the catalog and handbook are available in the Office of Student Services.)
Course Requirements: 1) Daily homework/class work (attendance, participation,
reading quizzes, oral reports, short response papers,
etc.) 300 points
2) Three tests @ 100 points each 300 points
3) Semester Project 300 points
4) Final 100 points
1000
Grades: Your grade will be determined on the basis of the percentage of points you earn on the course requirements. For example, 770 points = 77%=C+.
