Texts:    Lips, Hilary M., Sex and Gender:  An Introduction, 3rd edition, 1997.

Brantenberg, Gerd, Egalia’s Daughters:  A Satire of the Sexes, 1985.

Roscoe, Will,  The Zuni Man-Woman, 1991.

GOALS:  That students become more aware of:

v     The complexity of gender.

v     Gender is a major component of who we are and how we are treated by others.

v     While all human societies have gendered roles and lives, there is no single behavior or role that universally belongs to any one gender.

READINGS:  Each week’s readings are detailed on the course outline, which follows.  Additional required readings are on the course website.

EXAMS:  Brief essay quizzes will be done approximately weekly.  You will be given several essay questions in advance; one of these will be the day’s quiz.  Two of twelve quiz grades will be dropped. A “dropped” grade can be a missed quiz or quizzes with a lower grade.  Since two quiz grades will be dropped, there will be NO makeup quizzes; if you are late or need to leave early or simply can’t attend that day, the day’s quiz grade can be dropped (but no more than 2 will be dropped).  Your de support person will fax the quizzes to us, and your quiz grade will be posted on the course website.

ATTENDANCE:  Regular attendance is expected since a major component of the course will be in-class exercises and discussions.  Part of your grade will be participation in these activities.

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR:   Courteous behavior in this (as in all other classes) includes making comments to the entire class, and saving most other smaller conversations for a different time.  An obvious exception is when the instructors have assigned you to do small-group work for a specified portion of the class period.  In a compressed video class, you make a comment to the entire class by pressing the button on the microphone nearest you.  The technology involves a “feedback delay;” try to be patient with this.

DISCUSSIONS:  Feel free to disagree (with the professors and/or your classmates), but do so respectfully.  Your active participation is expected; each student has a unique and valid perspective which adds to the educational experience of everyone.  However, gender is a topic about which people often have strong feelings.  When you find yourself becoming “hot” about a topic, take time to make a note of those emotions and also to explore the experiences and/or reasoning which cause you to feel so strongly (i.e., count to 10, then do some self-analysis; don’t just react!?)

EMAIL & FAX:  You must activate your campus (UWC) email account, and use it for correspondence regarding this class.  Each email should be sent to BOTH instructors.  (You might utilize the Cc: function as well as the To: function.)  Papers may be sent as email attachments using Microsoft Word (these requirements allow us to more easily edit them and return them to you) OR you may ask your de support person to fax them to us at (715) 234-2462.  Either way, papers are due before the start of class on the due date.  It is also possible to email both instructors directly from the course web site.  Each paper will be acknowledged (via email to your campus email address) upon receipt; if you don’t get a reply in 24 hours, assume it was NOT received and send it again.

GRADING POLICY:  Your final grade is based on accumulated points, not on letter grades.  There is no "curve" in the sense of limiting the number of As, etc. that will be assigned.  Therefore, you are encouraged to study together and to help each other rather than competing for grades.  (This does NOT extend to submitting the same—or even extremely similar—wording on written assignments.)
