I was around when the women’s
liberation movement hit the US national scene in the late sixties.
I was simply stunned by it (‘blown away’). I was completely puzzled
by the things the women in the movement were talking about. I began
to study the matter; I became completely enrapt in it. More and more
I puzzled as to why something so important in our lives could be so well
ignored. When I was in college, gender was not seen as having any significant
bearing on our lives. I have learned that indeed gender has great bearing
on our lives. Gender turns out to be mysterious and powerful; it gets
us to do things we had no idea we are doing! The study of gender and
the force of culture on us is my main interest in women’s studies.
In the UW-Colleges I teach feminist philosophy (my home discipline is philosophy).
